The holiday in Washington D.C. revolves around -- what else -- politics.

There is no escaping politics in our divided age.

Everything is political now. And anything can become the latest hot-button bone of the contention in the Great American Culture War of the 21st Century.

What kind of car you drive.

What kind of jeans you wear.

Which social media platforms you use — or don’t use. Which newspapers you subscribe to, if any. Athletic leisure wear, pillows, french fries, gulfs of ocean water: Nothing is exempt from inclusion in the culture wars.

Not even Christmas.

Many American households celebrate Christmas— with secular and non-affiliated households cozying up to Christmas traditions like Christmas trees and gift exchanges. But most households in the U.S. celebrate the holiday season in some form or fashion.

The Jewish high holy celebration of Hanukkah, festival of lights, happens during the holiday season. Other families celebrate Kwanza.

Christmas is different in Washington D.C. than anywhere else on Earth. The holiday is always influenced by the occupant of the Oval Office. And this year was no exception.

From the moment the traditional Christmas Tree arrived at the White House, the holiday season has been a whirlwind of activities for the President and First Lady.

“The First Lady and I send our warmest wishes to all Americans as we share in the joy of Christmas Day and celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” said President Donald Trump in a statement on Christmas Day.

“For nearly 250 years, the principles of faith, family, and freedom have remained at the center of our way of life,” President Trump said on Christmas Day. “As President, I will never waver in defending the fundamental values that make America the greatest country in the history of the world — and we will always remain one Nation under God.”

“Today, especially, we also remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who are unable to be with their families. While their solemn mission keeps them far from home this Christmas, their service and sacrifice protect our freedom and allow Americans all across our country to celebrate in safety and peace. We are grateful for their devotion, and we keep them and their loved ones close in our hearts.”

“During the Christmas season, we pray for an outpouring of God’s abiding love, divine mercy, and everlasting peace upon our country and the entire world. To every American, and to those celebrating around the globe, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!”
